12.21.20 Do You Remember Your First Yellowtail?

One of the greatest gifts that I have ever received while on this Fish Village journey was a story from a first time Fish Village customer. Richard Williams booked a spot on one of our 2.5 day kayak mothership trips to San Clemente Island last June and such a good time that he wrote us a short story about his experience. We loved this story so much we just had to share it.

Do you remember your first car?  Mine was a 1950 Ford that I found in the back parking lot of an apartment building in Bethany, Oklahoma when I was sixteen.  It had its original exterior color, faded mint green, and original interior, light beige vinyl.  I got it for $275.  Push starter with three on the column.  I was the cool kid at a school of only 300 students, until Bill Reynolds showed up a month later with a \’57 Mustang.

Do you remember your first kiss?  Kim Klopfenstein.  I finally got the nerve up and asked Kim out.  Of course I had to then ask her dad if I could take his daughter out (which is another story) and after he said yes I picked her up on Saturday and off we went to the local burger joint, Braums, and then to the movies.  ET was playing at the time so we drove to the theater, parked the car and I got out and started walking to the theater.  All of a sudden I realized that Kim wasn\’t with me.  She was still sitting in the car, waiting patiently for me to open the door for her.  My parents taught me better than that so I ran back and apologized profusely.  After the movie, I drove Kim home and on the front porch I mustered up my nerve and had my first kiss.

Do you remember your first yellowtail?  Leave it to a fisherman to bring anything back to fishing.  It was June 27, 2020 at around 3:30 pm by San Clemente Island.  The captain of the Islander had moved the boat because of the wind, and we launched the kayaks. Right out of the gate, Tim Boyer from Pure Watersports caught a yellowtail.  I had spent the day before toiling all day in hopes of my first yellowtail.  Nothing.  But I knew it had to be today.  I had fished all day long with one line weighted with live bait and then a free line with live bait.  I had a couple of hits that I thought might be a yellowtail, but then later discovered that it was just a seal following me and stealing my bait.  I was about to give up for the day, but I remembered Tim telling me to hook the bait by the butt and the bait would swim deeper. Why not give it a try? At this point, I was willing to try anything.  After releasing the bait into the water I could hear it take the line slowly into deeper water, so I knew that the trick worked. About ten minutes into it, I could hear the bait getting nervous from the amount of line it was taking. Something\’s up. I slowly reached back and grabbed the rod, and that\’s when the reel started to scream. I flipped on the drag, and we were off to the races! The rod doubled over and the line was flying off the reel. I reached up and tightened the drag ever so slightly to give some resistance.  It helped, but this fish was not slowing down! Is it a shark?  A black sea bass? I had just witnessed one of the other guys bring in a five foot shark and ten minutes later a 75 pound black sea bass.  Then I was worried that the fish was on my lighter set up, so I looked down and it wasn\’t, so I knew that my odds had just increased.   I kept saying to myself \”just be patient, don\’t overwork the fish.\”  Sure enough, after about fifteen minutes of tug-of-war, I saw color.  The most beautiful thing to see was the silver and yellow.  I got it in, pulled it on board, and in my excitement, I didn\’t even bother to measure it or weigh it.  I do remember the fish\’s nose was at my seat and the tail ran past my feet.  When I went back to the mother ship to hand off the fish, I had a hard time lifting it, it was that heavy!  But of course I was pretty spent at that point.  It was truly a great experience and something that I will remember for the rest of my life.

12.20.20 The Village Pub reviews Pliny the Elder

While not specifically related to fishing we think most anglers out there will relate to the topic at hand… that being beer.

The idea that beer and fishing go hand in hand isn\’t a far stretch for many. It is easy to think that many of you have enjoyed a celebratory beer on the water (safely of course) or off the water. So we thought a beer blog series made perfect sense. With each installment of this series I will explore a beer and give you an honest review. Sometimes we may pair our beer with food, or sometimes we may just share one of our behind the scenes stories related to the beer.

In our first series post we will start off with an iconic double IPA that debuted in the year 2000. This beer may be 20 years old but its still remains incredibly relevant today. Some even refer to it as the Holy Grail of Double IPAs. We are talking about Pliny the Elder by Russian River.

Don\’t let its plain green and red label fool you. Beneath it\’s brown-paper wrapping lies one of the most iconic beers in the craft beer scene. Officially called Pliny the Elder, and commonly referred to as simply \”Pliny.\” Its named after a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian and author, who died in 79 AD while saving people during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. So is this beer the paragon of hopiness that so many claim? I\’m not sure I could say the Holy Grail, but it definitely makes it to my top 10 list of beers. If you consider yourself of beer connoisseur of any level you need to taste this beer. So what makes it so special? I think it\’s the perfect amount of sugar that creates a delicate balance against the bitterness of the hops. Even with an IBU (International Bitterness Units) of a 100, you don\’t get that kick in the face hoppy bite that is common to many Double IPAs. Instead you get juicy citrus flavors with a smooth hopy finish. Even at 8% ABV (Alcohol by Volume) it ranks high in terms of \”drinkability.\” This allows you to sit back and really enjoy the hoppy flavors of this masterpiece. When you do enjoy a Pliny make sure you take a minute to enjoy its deep golden color, and spend a few moments enjoying the aroma of citrus and caramel. Trust me this will only that first drink better.

Pliny maybe consider tame in today\’s work of Double IPAs, but no self respecting craft beer fan would say this beer is no longer relevant in the world of Double IPAs. As I get older I am finding life and happiness is all about balance, and that is what this beer excels at, \”Balance.\” High ABV and IBU can sometimes end up overwhelming the palate, but somehow Russian River has managed to combine all of this into one of the most juiciest well balanced Double IPAs on the planet. I will be honest you will probably have a hard time finding Pliny in your local BevMo, but thankfully you can order delivery off their website (California residents only.) The Fish Village team has ordered numerous times and we are always surprised that the speed and quality of their shipping department. The beer is delivered so fast it will still be cold when you pull it out of the box. I am not pressuring you to buy this beer, but if you respect yourself you should. Hahah just joking.

In my opinion, this beer sets the standard for double IPAs. Go enjoy and please do so safely.

12.19.20 Another day, another trip added to the schedule

Another 2021 San Clemente Island kayak mothership trip update.

We were serious when we told you that we were going to hustle to get more trips. We were serious when we said YOU are our #1 priority. Today we made it happen.

We added a NEW San Clemente Island 3.5 day kayak mothership trip to our schedule. That is right… not just another trip… but LONGER. Why? BECAUSE MORE FISHING IS MOST DEFINTELY BETTER.

Earlier today we sent out emails to everyone that tried to book with us, but ultimately missed out. They have priority right now to get on our newly offered trip. We had to make sure that they at least had a chance to score a spot on what many call a bucket list trip. These trips provide unique opportunities to fish an incredible island fishery in your own kayak.

Over the next few days we will be working with our booked guests to provide them with an opportunity to move their reservation to our newly offered 3.5 day trip which could result in newly open spots. We will have this wrapped up by Tuesday. If spots are still available, we will go public with our dates and a waiting list for sold out trips. Cancellations still occur… so it is wise to jump on the waiting list when the trip is sold out.

12.18.20 Many are happy and some are not

Some of you are probably wondering… what the hell am I talking about?

We just launched the 2021 San Clemente Island kayak mothership trip season schedule to our mailing list subscribers on Wednesday promptly at 6:00 PM. We knew that people wanted to get on this trip… we knew that people missed out on this trip last year due to COVID AND we knew that a lot of you are going crazy sitting at home.

We expected a large response… but we didn\’t expect a GIGANTIC response to the point where we couldn\’t even keep up. My poor wife who largely runs the administration of our company behind the scenes has been on a tear over the last two (2) days. She is booking all of you, she is creating the invoices and managing our email inbox all at the same time… normally not a challenge, but WOW this time she needed some help. So Joe and I stepped in to lend a hand to get through 300+ email requests, 40 DM\’s, 88 bookings and 80 invoices that were generated as a result of this release.

This is not a burden… this is exciting. This means we are growing. This means that we are providing a quality experience that people want to be a part of. We have always felt that this particular experience is something that every kayak angler would want to be a part of at least once. Even freshwater anglers find themselves at home on this trip… it seems to speak to just about everyone.

This trip is connecting the entire California kayak fishing community from NorCal to San Diego. Heck, we even have a few that travel from Nevada and Arizona. This means that the Islander crew gets a few more trips to work, means more money for them and their families. It also means a spike to the local economy in San Diego with hotel stays, meals, parking, etc.

We are working longer hours than normal right now to get you all booked and billed + ADD MORE TRIPS. This won\’t take long… most likely by Monday at the latest. We have already requested more trips from the Islander and may be adding a 3.5 day option as well, as we received a lot of requests for a longer trip. This is our highest priority right now… YOU are our highest priority right now.

12.17.20 Wow, that was fast!

Well… we said these trips would be highly contested and we also said that we expected to sell out within 24 hours. We are just about there with only a few spots left.

Last night we received over 250 emails (all after 6:00 PM). We have never seen a response like this. We were floored. This tells me that people love this trip, NorCal\’s Fresh n Salty rolls deep and that people want to get out there and live. This makes us so happy.

We are in the process of responding to every single person that attempted to book. We expect to get to all of you today. For those expecting confirmation emails after we you completed your form… we cannot automate that because we have to ensure that we process them in the order they were received. We would hate to confirm that you have a spot or worse don\’t have a spot and we were wrong. This is sort of like when you order something online and you have to wait to get the confirmation email that they have it in stock and will be delivered.

Sooo… what are we going to do? First, we need to talk to the Islander and get more dates (STAY TUNED). Second, we need to close out the remaining few spots.

We heard rumblings that some people that subscribed to our list did NOT receive the email. First let me say this… It is our intention to include everyone. There is no one that we want to exclude. Next I want to say that we literally want to book you all. So when we hear that people missed out because of a failure with technology… we got really bummed out.

Unfortunately we cannot control whether or not your email server thinks our email is spam. Our process includes a SPAM test and a compliance check. It passed both tests before we sent this out. We literally tested multiple times before sending right at 6:00 PM. Nonetheless, we are bummed that people felt that they missed out. Based on the 250+ email response, we had no idea that some of you were having issues until we started receiving text messages and DMs.

We will be looking into this problem and determine if we can improve upon this process. We want you all to have the best chance possible to fish with your buddies.

12.15.20 2021 SCI Kayak Mothership Trips Coming At Ya

We are suuuuppper excited about the 2021 season… the idea of wiping the slate clean, disinfecting ourselves from COVID and getting back out on the water. It\’s where we all want to be… sounds soooo damn delightful. We all need this!

Every year we see incredibly high demand for these trips. If it weren\’t for COVID-19, we would be launching at least six (6) dates for the 2021 season. With a great initial response to our trip marketing campaign and over one hundred (100) new email subscribers over the last two weeks we expect to see the highest demand for these trips we have ever seen. If we are right, this means we will be adding more trips to the 2021 schedule to meet the demand.

We want to create opportunities for you to fish with people that you know or to forge new relationships with people in your community. Last year we tested out the concept of \’community based\’ trips with the Central Coast Kayak Fishing (CCKF) trip. With more trip inquiries than any other trip… I would say that the community concept was very well received. So we are doubling down.

We are serving three communities aka California regions:

  • Southern California
  • Central Coast (Central Coast Kayak Fishing)
  • Northern California (Fresh n Salty)

We really like this approach as it is centered around communities, which something we believe strongly in. We think 2021 will be a breakout year for these trips. What is the best way to get on these trips? SUBSCRIBE, SUBSCRIBE, SUBSCRIBE!!!

It is simple, we have a mailing list that is free to join. You do not have to sell your soul to gain access. We do not spam and you can unsubscribe at any time.

To learn more about these trips, check out our trip page.

12.14.20 We love fishing and we love beer… soooo

Whether you enjoy a cold brew while fishing, cracking a cold one after a fun day on the water with your friends or pairing the perfect beer with your fresh catch… we can all agree that beer and fishing go hand and hand or rod to rod… whatever.

As Californians we are proud of the brews that hail from the Golden State, however we have a bad reputation for being a bunch of beer snobs. Sure… they exist all throughout the state but not here. No sir… No mam\’m. We love beer.

I challenged Joe (Director of Marketing, Technology) to put together a blog series about beer and the good eats we get to enjoy by catching our own fish. His response was a resounding \”F*** yea\”. Why challenge Joe to take this on? That is easy… Joe is an incredibly savvy beer connoisseur with a wide palette ranging from pilsners to stouts. As Joe says… \”I like beer, period. Some may be taste better than others and I certainly have my favorites, but I like beer\”.

So… to help launch this thing, we are going to start with the following brews:

12.12.20 My South Louisiana Experience

When Louisiana was proposed as the next Fish Village scouting location it took me about 2 seconds to say, “hell yeah.” I honestly knew very little about fishing Louisiana. I had been to New Orleans as tourist, but I never really left the city. The unique eco-system, the history and the culture of the region has always intrigued me. For these reasons Louisiana had always been on my kayak fishing bucket list. The fishing photos and videos on social media of Louisiana redfishing had led me to believe that Louisiana marsh fishing was lazy man’s fishing. Just me and a few feet of water, the sound of the breeze running through the grass, and a maze of waterways full of hidden ponds waiting to be discovered… this is what I thought was waiting for me in Louisiana. For all of these reasons Louisiana was easily one of the top three locations for me.

Sure getting to Louisiana wouldn\’t be easy. First a 4,000 mile road trip, in the middle of a pandemic, would be required. We could fly but someone needed to take the bullet and deliver the kayaks to the fishing lodge. Also to be completely honest I wasn\’t in rush to get on the plane in the middle of a pandemic. There were going to challenges to make this trip happen. First and foremost we didn\’t even own a trailer big enough for everyone\’s kayak. Also, this trip would take almost 2 weeks. I wasn\’t sure how I would be able to take a 2 week break from everything. We were in the middle of a major website redesign and we just started working on our online store. Luckily, Tim and Chris from Pure Watersports, our favorite kayak shop in Southern California, offered up their company trailer allowing us to transport 7 kayaks on a 4,000 mile road trip across the country. After we found a trailer all other obstacles seemed to fall magically one by one. Eventually, it became clear to me that the universe was on our side and this trip was going to happen.

2,000 miles and a about week later we eventually arrived at Port Sulphur, Louisiana. Unfortunately, when we arrived we were greeted with forecasts of high winds, and after my first day on the water my thoughts of lazily drifting through the marsh as I sight casted bull reds were gone. We had high winds all week, which is not the optimal conditions for any type of kayak fishing, but I also learned that conditions in the marsh are extremely dynamic as the tide changes. I would need to frequently remove my drive as I came upon swallow areas. I quickly adjusted to the conditions and the little nuances of kayak marsh fishing. My yak also didn’t have a power pole (highly recommended for this area) which would have allowed me to anchor myself as I fished the moving tide. The high winds highlighted the need for a power pole even more, but after spending a day getting blown around I eventually learned how to beach my kayak in shallow areas, which allowed me to anchor myself near the outlets. Unfortunately, I didn’t come home with that bull red, only catching small undersized trout.

Fishing a windy marsh was definitely a grind, however, mother nature took mercy on us the final day of fishing giving us a break from the wind for a few hours. During this time I was able to experience the tranquil nature of the Louisiana marsh that I had expected. As the winds subsided my senses were freed up to take in the true beauty this type of fishing. I don’t know about you but I find it amazing you can paddle for miles and still be in only a few feet of water. In the calm conditions I was also free to observe the myriad of wildlife that call the marsh home. The beauty of these few hours reminded my why I kayak fish. Maybe you kayak fish to catch fish, but I kayak fish for all the epic locations it takes me. In our small plastic boats we are always able to explore areas off limits to larger crafts. Whether it be the coast of California, the Mokohinau Islands in New Zealand, or the Louisiana Marsh, I kayak fish because it puts me closer to nature than any other type of fishing. Ok I didn’t come home with a cooler of fish, but  I will be back in better conditions and I will catch that red bull. Until then I have the memory of spending a week with some of the country’s best kayak anglers, and a few thousand photos of one of the most unique ecosystems on the planet. However, above all I have the memory of those few magical hours where the wind subsided and I was able to experience the true beauty of the Louisiana marsh.

12.10.20 South Louisiana Behind the Trip Part 1

I wanted to focus on my experience and the people that made this trip what it was… this was just as impactful as my first redfish from a kayak. When talking about my fishing travels I often find myself saying that the fishing portion is just a bonus. I sincerely mean that. The joys from my travels most definitely include fishing moments, but the most meaningful and fulfilling are the experiences and relationships that I wouldn\’t otherwise have.

Let\’s start with my road dogs… Joseph Martinez and Steve Ponce aka Pop\’s. Joe worked his ass off to help us advance our web capabilities and drive one hell of a marketing campaign during some trying times. What he accomplished over the last nine (9) months is remarkable and is the reason why we are in a better position to succeed. He did all of that + helped us cover this entire adventure via his Canon R5, iPhone and shared with all of you via Facebook and Instagram. He also ensured that we would only eat the finest food, he figured out gas stops and planned hotel stays. The dude was and is a beast! Thank you homie… Fish Village also says thank you.

So… I call my Pop\’s about two (2) months before the trip and start talking about long drives, good eats… and ummm a 24 ft. trailer. He asked who was gonna drive? I balked and then asked… do you have two (2) weeks to go for a drive? The rest was history. See… my Pop\’s was a truck driver back in the day and is probably the best driver I know. He saw an opportunity to do something cool with his son and driving comes easy to him and I saw an opportunity to do something cool with my Dad and show him what Fish Village is really about annnnnd drive a 24 ft. trailer 4,100 miles across the south. Crazy to think that we rarely played music in the car, we never argued, we never ran out of stuff to talk about and we got to experience the south together. At the end of the day… this road trip was priceless and something I will always cherish. Thanks Dad for driving us wack-a-doodles to Louisiana and back, everyone benefited from your efforts and loved your company.

Before I even knew that this trip was happening, there was a force of energy stronger than my own that refused to lay down when COVID was ruining everyone\’s plans. Ivy Harris started putting a plan together when I wasn\’t even sure that Fish Village had a future. Soon he informed me of this plan and it resonated with me immediately. He got me fired up… he got Joe fired up… he got Sylvia fired up… he got Rob fired up… and that most definitely meant he got Nic fired up too. We needed a kick in the ass and Ivy had the right size boot for the job.

His plan was to construct an incredible team of anglers, assemble in south Louisiana, fish n film and build a lasting program in Louisiana for our customers to enjoy. His plan became a reality on Sunday November 15th, when all eighteen anglers gathered at Deep Delta Bowfishing camp in Plaquemines Parish. At one point I found myself smiling and looking over our group realizing that this wouldn\’t have been possible if it weren\’t for Ivy. I know Ivy sacrificed his free time, made countless phone calls, connected us with incredible people and pushed me to build the best product and customer experience possible. Ivy Harris… thank you for driving this effort and making this incredible experience possible. And one more thank you for the King Cake and for the absolutely over the top custom 85th Day fishing rod. I was floored when you presented that to me.

This trip created opportunities that I just haven\’t had over the last decade. Opportunities to take an awesome road trip, to eat new food, to learn about our country, to experience our country, to meet new people and to fish new waters. This trip pushed my comfort limits, yet I was never uncomfortable. Sure I have heard about southern hospitality and have experienced it through my travels… but not to this extent. It was like a welcome mat was rolled out for us and everyone wanted to talk to us. It was good soup for the soul.

I am going to keep coming with the Behind the Trip posts until I finish my story… sooooo sorry, not sorry.
